3/17/2023 0 Comments Observer reporter![]() ![]() I’ve had the most wonderful job, one that gave me access to extraordinary people. That’s miles, not kilometres.īut mainly, I’ve had the privilege of documenting lives lived in Sarnia. One of those New York speedsters took me screaming down the St. The last weekend that I was assigned to work at The Observer coincided with the offshore powerboat races in Sarnia. This job has opened a whole lot of doors for me too, like the backstage door at a local David Wilcox concert when I sat down with him for a pizza, a beer and an interview. I think I justified my participation in the video by telling myself that if I showed I could do it, other people may be inspired. More recently, I did a piece about learning to hammer vinyl siding onto a Habitat for Humanity house. Much to my surprise, they didn’t just show me the boat they were racing in, they got me to suit up and ride the waves with them. There was the time when I was interviewing the Olympic sailing team of Bill and Joanne Abbott just before they left for Atlanta in 1996. ![]() I have to say it's been a bit of a rush on the rare occasion I've been in front of the camera, rather than behind it. There's a demand for visuals in this business like never before, just one of a thousand changes to challenge a more traditional writer like me. Of course, I have to admit that in 25 years at The Observer I’ve made exceptions and jumped into the middle of a story for the sake of a news video and photos. That makes drawing attention to my retirement a little bit difficult. I hope you've been able to count on me to provide context and bring perspective to an event, not star in it. I’ve never bought into the school of journalism that says a reporter should become part of the story. Like most print reporters, I don’t like to be the centre of attention. Perhaps that’s because I’ve spent nearly three decades as a journalist, mostly watching rather than participating in events. ![]()
